rattling noise when goosing my 91 bird

Hey guys,

I just bought a 91 bird and a pretty weird thing happened today.
I was showing the car to a friend and when he started the car and goosed it uo to 4-5k rpm, the car made this rattling noise and something even hit me, it didnt feel like metal though. It sounded like something was boucing around, like when you put ice cubes in a blender or a dry leaf gettish smashed by the band spinning. The thing is, i was messing around with the car earlier today and it didnt make that noise when I goosed it. I should also mention that my friend did this when the car was cold.

Thanks guys

Take your "friend" out back and introduce him to Mr. Hillerich and Mr. Bradsby. Revving an engine to 4-5,000 RPM when it's cold? I don't even put my car in gear until the oil pressure has stabilized, and usually not until the temperature gauge starts to move.

"Conservation of fuel" you ask? Screw that. I'm more into conservaion of metals. I don't want to have my conscious saddled with the burden of being personally responsible for the terrible environmental waste of the tin, lead, aluminum, copper, phosphor, silicon, and all the energy required to mine, refine, and form it into a set of bearings for my engine.

When he regains consciousness, ask him how much help you're going to get from him in helping to restore your crank and rods.

As for the part(s) that may have struck you, and the source of the noise, all I can offer is conjecture. Get some clean, fresh oil into the sump and a good filter installed, then analyze when and how the noise occurs. With that information, we might be able to help you determine the source, and guide you through the repair.

Info on where you were when "something" hit you would be helpful, and where is the noise comming from? Vader is right, cold engine+4500rpm=not your friend.

Sounds like you need new friends.

If you're lucky it's an accessory like a water pump or something. Get a piece of heater hose and stick it in your ear, use it like a stethoscope to locate the source of the noise; maybe disconnect the belt and see if it goes away; if it's from inside the motor, get your checkbook ready.
