PROBLEM...HELP!!!

car problem

'86 IROC w/LG4...I went to start it.....everythings fine at first...

Then I go to kick it down, and i hear this "clank clank ***** ***** clank"

sounds like its from front of block, by belts....

The belts are not wobbling, and are tight.

WHAT'S WRONG?

By the way, it has just under 75,000 miles and the smog pump is 3-4 months old...

You're gonna have to be a little more specific. It could be any of the pullies, or the water pump etc. If it seems to be running fine, start it up again and find where it's coming from. Then get back to us. We aren't psychics

If the car is not runnig anymore. I would venture a guess that your timing chain has some problems.

stu I know that noise.. Thats the teeth off your cam sprockets clanking around inside the timing chain cover. Time for a new one. dont run it anymore btw, you'll only do more damage. Hopefully you didnt break anything else... LOL have fun taking off ALL your accessories.... And you'll need a puller for the balancer. its SO MUCH fun....

Don't worry Stu. I have a balancer puller and we can do it in an hour or two. I've done it about 10 times myself. Actually we could do it in your parking lot!

Rogue - Cam sprockets????? There aren't sprockets on eth cam. You mean the gear???

It idles just fine, and it restarted 3x, so I doubt its a timing issue

Did your harmonic balancer seperate? Sometimes the outer ring portion of the balancer will drift back against the timing chain cover and cause some nasty rubbing/clanking sounds. Take a look there. It's pretty easy to tell if its seperated.

I have experienced a situation where an alternator did that... something came loose internally on the armature; the alternator still worked; but it made this bizarre noise all the time, especially when revved quickly, and it had a noise that kept on after the belts had visibly stopped.

You may also want to take a look at the fan clutch, and make sure it hasn't died and is allowing the fan to wobble around and hit something.

Stuart,

Cut the problem in half - disconnect all the drive belt(s) and restart. If the problem still exists, you've just eliminated all the accessories. If the problem disappears, you only have four or five accessories to check out.
