oil consumption???

need some opinions . I have about 1200 miles on my rebuilt 350. it is burning about 1 quart of oil every 250 miles. I get a slight amount of smoke when i nail it but other than that no smoking problems. I have no oil leaks. I did find that i put the edelbrock valve covers on w/o the pvc oil baffles (shame on me) so I need to put that on. The rebuild was a fresh .040 over bore, new pistons and rings(and honed), Heads were new guides new valves w/teflon seals?????? block was decked .020 and heads shaved .020. could the oil baffles not being there let the pvc suck that much oil? Could the rings just not be seated yet? Is it possible the intake isnt sealing due to the amount shaved off of the block and heads? It runs fantastic. Plenty of power all the way up to 6000rpm. Real fun to play with. I would love to here some ideas-----thanks

If you didn't have the intake shaved to match the deck & head shaving, I'd vote for intake not sealing.

had enough b.s.with the oil consumption-----used a boroscope to view the inside of the intake runners for brown streaks (oil pulling in where it mates w/ the head) none found. I am almost positive it is oil getting past the rings. I used a friend of a friends machine shop and now know why the labor was so cheap------so needless to say engine is coming out and going to replace the short block. hope all goes well

latest update-----turned out 12 of the 16 guides were never replaced like the machinist told me. they had anywhere from .008 to .016 slop in them. I am now dealing with a new machine shop and will never go back or advise anyone to use the idiot i originally used. this is just one of several things he screwed me on. conviently the reciept is vague enough that i dont have a leg to stand on .
also going with another block. found a 4-bolt 350 in great shape. there were some scratches in the cyl. walls of the old block that the first machine shop told me not to worry about hmmm 1 qt of oil every 200 miles....guides and condition of block explains everything

I hereby withdraw my vote...

The good news is that you found out what was wrong. The bad news is what you found out was wrong.
