i don't know about them stock from the factory, maybe someone else can address that. i'm about to install an engine in my old truck that i put an 'expansion plug' type block heater in. it was made by KAT and i bought it at the local parts house (had to special order i think). gm's using this same type but made by packard electric on the new chevy vans. it's RPO KO5. i can get a part number for it if you want to get one from gm. the KAT ones are probably cheaper though.

so where does it plug into the engine ? thanks for the info.

lower part of the block, they replace the freeze plug.

yeah, if you want to put one in you need to pull an expasion or 'freeze' plug and install the heater. pull the pipe threaded drain plugs on the side of the engine first to drain coolant (remove radiator cap first, i forgot to write that). if the engine's out of the car use the freeze plug back by the oil filter housing, that's what they do here at the gm factory anyway. then it's just a matter of routing the cord.
just a note. i had one plugged in last winter and it got snow (or water in whatever phase) in the connection to the extension cord and it zapped the connectors. i'd protect the plug better in the future.
