I was driving today and there was what seemed like a light whining noise comming from the engine??

It got louder as i drove, then would slow down what i stopped....??

I haven't got a chance to look under the hood yet seeing as how i'm at school....

Any ideas on what to look for?

 

I wish my engine would give lite beer. But I guess light wine would be OK.

Check all fluids, including the power steering pump.

Serp. Belt.

Alt. bearings.

Water pump bearings.

Power Steering pump bearings.

A/C compressor bearings.

AIR pump bearings.

That should get you started, and hopefully it'll just be one of those.

 

When the water pump pulley bearing wears out, it can make a horrid whine.

Take off the belt that goes over the water pump and spin it by hand, if its the problem, you should be able to hear it whine a little if you spin it quickly by hand.

Also... if you have a manual trans, check the oil level, it may be a little low.

 

Alternator. The above suggested suggestions are good ones. my experince when alternators go out they like a supercharger . as metioned the bearings are usually the culprit.

 

if all is fine then spray some WD40 on the pullys.

 

I have the exact same thing with my 305. I know it's not my alternator though, because I just put a new one in. Would some spray oil or WD40 sprayed directly into these pumps' pulleys temporarily remove the said whine, thus showing you which one is at fault? Presuming that it was a bearing making the noise....

 

Well the whine got louder, and i have connected it with the power steering.....When i turn it gets louder.....and harder to turn the wheel.....

If you are sure it is the power steering pump, shut the engine off and let it sit for a while to let the bubbles calm down then add some fluid. To be sure, remove your belt and run for a few seconds. No wine and it is the pump (or alternator or water pump) Another winer is an automatic transmission. They always wine when low.

 

I put some more power steering fluid in and the noise is gone......:lala:

i was gonna suggest looking for your mother in law under the hood...but that would be more like a loud nagging sound

 

Only 18 years old.........Let's hope a mother-in-law is not in the near future.....
