Just bought a l69 - a coupla ?s

hey guys, I'm a newbie here. I used to have an 86 IROC that I did so much to and then I lost it (stolen) :-( well, I have always wanted another one and I finally bought it, I bought a 84 z28 with the 5.0 HO (L69?) and a TH400 (swapped from a TH350) - it needs to be restored, but I had a few questions. I have a complete built 355 in my shop with heads, cam, intake, etc. Can I use this motor with the original ECM and carb and engine accessories? I want to delete the A/C also, is this hard to do? I also wanted to know how hard it would be to replace the TH400 with a 700r4, I have one of those in the shop too, the real worry I have about it is a T/V cable hooking up to the original Q-Jet. Will it work? ANy help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Welcome back to the 3rd gen owner's fold.

TH350 wasn't available in '84 3rd gens. Only factory automatic option was TH700. So, get the right factory parts like the cable bracket, and the TV cable shouldn't be any problem.

The ECM et al shouldn't be a problem with the 350 as long as the cam doesn't have too much overlap and the intake allows for spreadbore bolt on.

The difficulty of AC delete depends upon how far you want to take it. Removing the compressor, brackets, hoses, condensor, & receiver is easy enough. Non-AC heater housing & controls will be a little more difficult.

hmm... makes me wonder what else has been messed with on the car... he showed me the junk TH350 that he pulled out (wouldn't shift) because he wanted me to haul it off with the car, and the TH400 is out of a 79? Blazer with a 400 small block that he has sitting there. He said the turbo 350 was in there when he bought it and it never worked right. Maybe because it is built for a 700r4? Can anybody else give some helpful info?

The 355 should go right in with the ecm and Q-jet as long as its not to radical like five7kid said. The car was originally made for a 700r4 so it should bolt right in no problem , and since that was the original tranny that came in the car the TV cable should hook right up to the Q-jet.The only thing that doesnt make since to me is that L69's(if thats what it is) came with five speeds not autos , unless I am crazy.Good luck ,and welcome to the boards

Well, it's not too wild a combo, I dont expect more than 375 hp at most. It is a spread bore intake. The tech section says that in 84 the l69's came with auto or m5, the '83s came only with M5, hopefully it wont be too much trouble. I'm also hoping to upgrade most of the suspension and steering to IROC or 1LE parts. Thanks for the welcome.
