fuel tank & pickup questions
I need a new gas tank. Mine was sumped but I wan't to run a stock style exhaust system and can't because the sump hangs down way too low. not to mention I have a leak on the top of my tank so anyway...My main questions are:
1) Does the "unit" thats locked on top of the gas tank have the same fittings on a carbed car as my TPI-equiped car does? My tank has hard lines coming off it which connect to rubber hose then back to hard line. I have the AN-to-Metric fittings which would make my job a lot easier...
2) My gas tank has baffles in it, I'm told this isn't on all gas tanks? Also are all tanks the same size?
3) Is there any way I could modify my pick-up to work with an in-line pump? How?
Any advice would be appreciated I'm going junkyarding in a few days to find a new tank and can't afford to figure this stuff out on my own
Thanks,
Chris

I'll hazzard a response (based on limited direct knowledge).
1) Same.
2) Not sure on that one. In-tank pump types do for sure, and there's some sort of baffling on them all. But, whether they're different or the same, I'm just not sure.
3) Take the pump off, use rubber fuel line to extend it down to the bottom of the tank. Arranging a strainer becomes a little more difficult. Personally, I'd find a unit from a carb'd car. Or just get the entire tank.
Hope that was some help. If nothing else, you're closer to the top now.

Pickups for a carb car and TPI car are different..if you have the fittings to use your TPI pickup..keep it.Just use a piece of rubber line to extend the feed line where the (stock in tank) fuel pump use to be on the sending unit to within 1-1.5" of the bottom of the tank.I beleive the FI cars had baffled tanks..and some carbed cars..but some didn't.All were basically the same size..IIRC some years were a half gallon bigger or so.You can defintitely use your pickup..just get a new tank..extend the feed line to near the bottom of the tank as mentioned...put the inline pump behind the rear seat or wherever you choose..plumb it and start the car and check for leaks.Done.

I mis-read the 1) question. I took that to mean the way the pickup mounts to the tank. That is the same, but the fittings (as stated by bad) are different.
If you need a new tank, might as well get one that has the type of pickup you want, if possible.
