Tune Up
hi all. well i have just bought a new car for myself. its an 87 GTA, wonderful car. however i need to get a tune up for it becuase it is bogging down a little bit. what all is included in the basic tune upand how much can i expect to be charged if i take it to a shop. also, are there different kinds of tune ups? if so which would be good for a car that just needs to get that pep back into it? thx for all help!

Here is what I would when I get a new car.
Change:
plugs
wires
cap
rotor
air filter
fuel filter
oil filter
oil
coolant
trans fluid
brake fluid
rearend fluid
O2 sensor
Check/Set:
timing
min air
TPS
clean IAC
clean TB
You don't need to do everything. The Tune up stuff like ignition would be your best place to start.

But some folks swear you should just leave the tranny fluid alone, unless it is a manual tranny. They feel changing it removes too many microscopic bits that are actually useful in holding everything together. They may be right.

Yeah, I have heard some people just let it be. Personally I change the filter and flush the slush box every year of so. I did this with my last auto equipped car and I never had a problem in 40,000 miles. But it comes down to personal preference.

For the cap, rotor, and rear end, a service manual should have all the info that you would need. The timing would be in there as well, but you would need a timing light. You could also do some searches around here and see what you find. Sometimes people post pics and step by step instructions...
