How many valves/cylinder?
hey all, i was wondering how many valves per cylinder the crate ZZ4 has. i have read a few webpages on turbo/supercharging an engine, and they all said the more valves per cylinder the better!
any suggestions, or information about the ZZ4, or other sweet engine packages?

the LT4 and the Caddy Northstar are the only engines I know with 4 valves per cylinder. And the LT4 was only availavle on the 96 Limited Edition Corvette.

Uhm... The LT4 has two valves per cylinder too. Are you thinking of the LT5, the ZR1 engine?

For those who are seriously encumbered with an excess of ready cash, there was a set of aftermarket heads available for V8s with four valves per cylinder. I think they were called "Dominion" heads or something like that... I could be wrong (correction: I'm most likely wrong, but maybe I'm at least close on the name).

The money spent on a multivalve SBC could be spend on other 'go-fast' parts and end up with more power.
twin dual cam 3.4L has 4 per cylinder

the lt5 engine was develope in conjuction with lotus, and it almost bankrupt GM.
chevy out gmpowertrain.com for all the gm engine line up.
a ls6 vette will run faster than a lt5 vette, and it do it with 2 valve per cylinder.
the audi engine have 5 valve per cylinder.
so their 1.8T liter engine have 20 valve that is 4 more than our beloved v8. it is a great little engine, with just a chip you can raise hp from stock 150 to 200 safely.
the audi tt use the same engine but put out 220 hp with bigger intercooler.
my point is, i don't have a point so i will just stop now...

...and I always thought that Kiekhaffer/Mercury Marine in Fond du Lac helped develop and built ALL LT5 engines for Chevrolet. I know that Lotus is owned by GM, so I guess you could say they conspired on the basic design, but Merc did the final engineering, design, and build.
Incidentally, the most powerful gasoline internal combustion engines have only two valves per cylinder, unless you call 2,500 HP at the crank "low-power".

Isn't it interesting that good 'ol Smokey Yunick agrees?
The Smokemeister granted an interview with one of the Hotrod rags a few years back, and multiple valves per cylinder was one of the topics.
Here is the condensed version of Smokes' comments -
He said MV heads are "horse****". Why? Because they only provide additional flow at high RPM - because of increased valve area - but that they actually KILL low-RPM performance because of turbulance. Smoke went on to say that in a high-RPM 4-cylinder that's okay, but that in a SBC it's stupid.
Smoke says that we should use the largest single intake and exhaust valve we can fit in the head. He has a mountain of flow data on 2 vs. 4 valve heads. One thing - Smoke did this interview BEFORE VVT - a little Honda Motors trick that may have turned the tide in favor of wilder cams and 4 valve engines.
And, D_Amlee.........
Those ARE Dominion heads, and they ARE $3,200. Well beyond what the average SBC builder will spend. The dyno test I saw...and it's been awhile, showed about 50 HP extra, mostly at high RPM with the Dominion heads.
Uh, but they were tested against stock GM units.
I'd choose the AFR 195cc street head over them, and use the $2,000 I saved for a 12psi ATI supercharger with intercooler, and a leeeeeeetle shot of nitrous ........just to keep things cool.
How 'bout dem fancy 4-valve heads now????
I got your 4-valve heads...right here.
100% Columbian bean ala Juan Valdez today - it's the reeechest kind.

Dwang, I have seen road tests for the early LT5s and they were turning in low 12s. I beleive it was an 89. Maybe they meant 1990 because I haven't seen an 89 ZR1 before.
The LS6 turns in 12.7s from what i have seen so far.
The 97 cobras (and maybe newer) have 4 valves per cylinder and DOHC cams and they still barely break into the high 13s. haha. When are they going to get it right.
