What would you pay for this car?

I know it's been posted many times before, but now it's my turn.

A buddy of mine has an '87 Formula, LB9/700R4 hardtop. It was originally an L98 car. The body is ok, a couple small spots of rust. 16" wheels with decent tires, very clean red interior with no rips. It's got that stupid Ferarri style body kit on the sides an back. The rear bumper cover has a hole in it. I'd put the stock pieces on anyway. It will need a paint job b/c it's been sitting for a while and there's that green film of mold on parts of it. Now to the motor. It's got a rod knock. I'm interested in the car as a daily driver so I would just pull the pan and put new bearings in it. No biggie. He want's $800 for it which seems a little steep to me. What do you think it's worth?

I paid 800 for my 85 Iroc. It had bad tires, brakes were all screwed up, had a cracked DS head, needed repainted, had some surface rust, and needed a new hood.(that's just the major stuff...) I don't regret buying it one bit.........

Is there a specific question you might have had about the rod knock, or some other Tech/General Engine related question? otherwise, this kind of thread has a better chance of surviving at: www.nethirdgen.org

Mac has graciously allowed all TGO non-technical posts to be placed there.

do you think it would be worth it to just pull the oil pan and change the bearings or rebuild the whole motor?

If you are only trying to quiet the engine to resell the car, then replace the bearing shells only if you like. If you plan to keep the car and expect it to be reliable, you might as well remove and inspect the crank. Since the engine has to be at least raiesd to remove the oil pan, it is not much more work to remove it completly and do the job corectly.
