when you turn the ignition switch to "on" you should hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds to prime the system. if it isn't doing it then that's part of your problem.

I know this thread is really old, BUT... how exactly do you hear the fuel pump running? Can you hear it from inside the car?

When I turn they key to On, I hear this clicking coming from my carb... until I turn the key to Start, then it goes away. I'm having trouble starting my car and everyone suggests listening to hear the fuel pump priming the system.

But what does it sound like?

That clicking in the carb i believe is the mixture solenoid. The fuel pump sound is a high pitched whine. You can hear it easily if you stand behind the car. BUT, this is a null point because you have an LG4 which has a mechanical fuel pump not an electric fuel pump. I'd look into the automatic choke and maybe some tuneup parts instead........

Fuel Filter Replacement

Thanks for the insight about the fuel pump Red...

I went out and replaced my fuel filter today... couple of things threw me off about the whole thing though. First of all, I've got rubber fuel lines from the pump to the carb, and the inverted flare nut that connects the line to the carb goes in on the front passenger side. When I first looked at it, I thought the fuel line was the metal pipe that enters the back of the carb- except that the nut wasn't as big as it was supposed to be.

Anyway, as I was taking the rubber fuel line off, I noticed that there's no "flare nut gasket" (as indicated on back of fuel filter package) or "small washer" (as listed in Hayne's Manual). There was also no small gasket on the old fuel filter. Also, the spring inside the carb didn't push the old filter element out... I wouldn't even have known the spring was there if I didn't stick my head down there to look.

The other thing that threw me off was that no gas leaked out the entire time. After I put the new element in, I tried starting the car (haven't been able to for several days... still no luck), and then I took the fuel line off again. This time, gas did leak out of the line.

Was my old filter element really in that poor of condition?
