My '86 305 camaro sat for about three months, then I started driving it, I noticed that when I start it it runs really hard for about 5 min. I took it to a friend who hooked it up to a machine that said my forth piston is sticking. I was told that since it sat for so long it my take a while for the rings to reset, should I assume this is the case?

 

i'd say your friend is on drugs.

your rings may have stuck in place, but a little oil and running the engine should free them up fairly quick. the piston isn't getting stuck and then freeing it's self as the engine spinns.

Now, I have heard of lifters getting sticky after sitting in sludge for too long, and a sticky lifter may make the valve operate in a slightly sluggish fasion. Normally the best cure for any of these problems is to do several oil changes at increased frequency to help dissolve out the varnish buildup.

 

Two words - synthetic oil.

Please elaborate on what you mean by running hard. Do you just mean at high RPM's? If your car is carburated, it would be normal for it to idle high until the choke is open (I hate that about my car!)

Vader, Would the synthetic oil break the varnish up quicker? Also, the question has been asked over and over about changing to synthetic with high miles, well how about going to a blend for a couple oil changes, then to full synthetic? Would this help the seals, etc.. "get used" to the synthetic? Just a thought!
