How difficult is it to replace a fuel pump?

The other night my fuel pump gave out on me and I was wondering how difficult they are to replace and if any special tools are necessary. Thanks.

Ede is right, it's a real PITA!

If you plan on keeping the car, and are not afraid to customize it.... do what I did. I cut out a square (10*10) on the floor board just above the gas tank, and custom fit a 'trap' door on some new sheet metal.

Works like a charm, and the need to drop the entire rear to get to the fuel pump is now a thing of the past. :lala:
Good Luck

i would just drop the tank and spend roughly 3 to 6 hours on your back, good time to clean around the open tank area, and look for any bad area in the body or tank itself.

handtools, jack, stands; thats all you need really.

the hardest part most will say is getting the gas out to make the tank easier to move around.

The only special tools I used when doing my fuel pump was a lift. Boy that made it easier!!!

It is not that bad, took me about 5 hrs for the first one. I had to remove just about everything in the rear. Maybe a can of rust penatrant handy would help on some of those stubborn bolts...

I should have added that cutting a hole in the frame is dangerous, and that when I made my trap door, I did this when my tank was already removed from the vehicle....

NEVER cut and weld with the possibility of a fuel leak near.
