Non F-body. Replacing heater core in 1989 Grand Am.

I would like to replace the heater core in my father in law's 1989 Pontiac Gran Am for Christma. Does anyone happen to know if the dash has to be pulled or is it similar to the procedure for our F bodies as previously posted? He was quoted about $400 to have it fixed. I would sure like to do it for $40 for the part!
Thanks for input. Sorry it's not F body question,(I have 1990 RS) but everyone here is quite knowledgeable and I respect your advice.

you should have to up under the dash to get to it. never done a grand am, and have owned 3. i've doen a buick skylark once and it wasn't too bad as far as heater cores go. the buick and pontiac are similar cars.
