Loss of power at around 3 grand?

A while ago I posted having problems with not having any juice above about 3 grand on the tach. Anyway I was most certain it was one of my cats clogged up that was causing the loss of power. Anyway I took the cats off and got new ones and have just realized that I dont think it is the cats that are causing my loss of power. I mean I can romp on the pedal and when I get around 3000 it just doesnt want to go anymore??? Could this be an EGR problem or could the EGR because my plugs to foul up and then cause the loss of power, or some kind of combination like that!???? Thanks, any insite would be helpful.

Well I havent gotten the new cats changed in yet, but I have a notion that those werent the initial problem or loss of power. Reason being is because when I removed them they didnt seem to be as bad as I thought they were. So now I'm thinking that its something else. The fuel pressure had been previously checked and was ok, asd the fuel filter is brand new, about a month or two old. The air filter is clean as well. It just seems that there is something else causeing it not to want to rev up above 3 grand. Could it be something to do with the ignition system or the EGR valve. I believe that when this all started to go down that I was getting EGR code............

Thanks

PB8,

Temporarily disconnect the vacuum line from the EGR solenoid and cap/plug the line for diagnosis. The EGR shouldn't be open under heavy accelleration, but just in case...

The EGR being stuck open shouldn't cause plug fouling, since the mixture would burn cooler and leaner. A stuck closed EGR usually doesn't cause any operational problems other than a possibility of mild detonation at cruise. Leaks in the EGR vacuum control lines would tend to lean the mixture, again not fouling the plugs.

Your mixture may be rich, or it is possible that the ignition system can't deliver spark at higher RPMs. This can happen due to a weak ignition coil, failing HEI amplifier/switch module, weak insulation on the plug wires, a failing coil wire, plug gaps too wide, or an excessively high heat range of the plugs.

Thanks Vader the help is much appreciated. I will do that and give it a shot and let you know how things go. Although I probably wont get to it for a little while, seeing my car is at my old mans house in the garage, and that is an hour away. Again thanks!

When was your last full tune up?
If it wasnt recently do cap, rotor, plugs, wires. if that still doesnt do it replace your ignition module.

I had a similar problem and it was the ignition module
Good luck
