Mechanic screwed up fuel sender .. any recourse?

I had my fuel pump replaced at a local mechanic.
After I got my car back, I noticed the fuel guage didn't move
after getting some gas.
Took the car back to the mechanic and after looking at it, they said the sender is messed up, but it's not completely their fault because it's common for them to break during a fuel pump install.

Anyways, they said to fix it, it would cost $500.
That's just for the part. They said they wouldn't charge labor because it was broken by them.

I'm pretty mad about the situation, and expected them to fix it and buy the part. At least they could refund some of the labor cost for the fuel pump install. Anyways, if I can't get anything out of them other than free labor to fix the sender, what would be the cheapest place to get one?

It is not common for sending unit to break during a fuel pump replacement unless someone is careless in their work. What is common is for the fuel pump sock (strainer) to be put on improperly in such a manner that it rubs against the fuel float on the sending unit, preventing it from operating properly. A good source for a cheap sending unit is the local junkyards, often times you can get the whole tank, sending unit, and pump for about $50.00.

I agree with Trickster.

Having changed my pump two times, I know for a fact that it can be replaced without damaging the sender.

Did your mechanic remove the entire tank assembly, or try to lower the tank just enough to get the sending unit out of the tank? If he only tried to lower it, I can see how it could have been damaged.

And that $500.00 quote for the part is crap. Try EBAY as well. I have had good luck with Thirdgen parts (thats his seller ID) and he often has entire sending units listed at 9.99 opening bid. Typically they sell for $20-25.00

Best of luck.

Well I know this stuff does happen but 99% of the time it doesent. Buy another sending unit take it back and have them replace it. Customer satisfaction should be thier priority since shops are slow all over the country. $500 is very steap for the job I dont think the sending unit costs more then $150 new. Azone should be able to order you one just take the new or used sender in and have them replace it since they offered to wave the labor charge to begin with there should be no problem.
