FUEL PUMPS

hey huys,
I think my fuel pump is getting ready for fuel pump heaven, like 165K on it, it sounds ok--but sometimes, well ya know---and its one out of three parts that are left that are stock/original...Yes I run TBI but have a 350,(with stock lo3 set up) is there a preference or any recomendations as far as hi flow (do they even make that for tbi?) or brand that might enhance my situation or are more reliable??? I just figure that when I replace it, I should do it right and get the best for my situation, I appreciate all suggestions--Thanks again guys..

T41,

Let me get this straight. You have a fuel pump that is nine years old, has 165,000 on it and is still working, and you want one that is MORE reliable? Damn, you're a tough customer.

I would suggest that if the original AC/Delco pump has given you that kind of service, you might want to get another one just like it so you can run another 165,000-plus miles without a failure. Am I missing something here?

Do you really want to change a fuel pump if you dont have to? If you havent already, take into account what must be done to accomplish this. If you still want to change the pump, the best way to go is to get a kit, like the one here: http://www.cottonsperformance.com/ It flows 255 liters per hour, at a rating of 60 psi and 13.2 volts, good for up to 670 HP. Good luck. This job is one that I dread, and I love working on thirdgens.

There have been quite a few fuel pump postings lately here and I just pulled mine, so I have been recomending the place that I got my pump from. Auto Performance Engineering (877)875-2091 sells Walbro pumps that are a great value for the money. I got a high flow for my TPI system that flows up to 255 litre per hr. The cost is almost the same for the high performance one as it is for the stock flowing one. Mine was about 90 bucks shipped. My local NAPA had an el cheapo model for about 60 bucks. Its not as dreadful of a job as many think, it just takes some patience and time. Save yourself some $$ and do it yourself if you have the tools!

Outch! No Vader your not missing a thing, I guess what I was really asking is that if there is a fuel pump that is better for the 350 I have (now) oppose to the stock 305 fuel pump set up the car came with..I guess thats what I was trying to say, the new motor has minimal milage and for all I know the strain of the 350 may have had something to do with its whining and yes I also consider the age and mileage, sheesh--I thought this forum was to talk about things like this, and no Greg Z I dont like doing anything I dont have to, and I mean anything-that includes paying a hook to come get me because I ignored the whining of my fuel pump. And yes I have heard that usually these fuel pumps when cared for (annnual fuel filter changes) last to about 165K so call me paranoid if ya must, this is my daily driver and I hate the hook ($$$). I hope this clears up my situation, thanx

You could always put another good old A/C pump in and add an adjustable fuel pressure regulator to your TBI unit. I changed out my origingal A/C Delco pump on my TBI at around 110,000 miles only to find out that the old one was still fine. I'll sell you the one I took out for 5 or 10 bucks! Lol. It seems like the TBI cars don't have near as many fuel pump failures as the TPI cars do. Probably because the pressure is so much lower. If you added a regulator though, I would think a new stock pump would deliver enough pressure to keep the 350 happy.
