I may get a '90 RS 305...I have general questions..help please
I may be getting a '90-92 305 RS camaro...depends on what they have at the auction.
I was wondering what do these things get miles per gallon wise?
How many speeds in the manual version?
Whats the stock 0-60 and quarter mile times?
Could a good running 305 beat the new Mustang GT's? (friend is getting one and he is wanting to race)
And one more odd question, but how many gallons do the gas tanks on our cars hold?
thanks alot....

I'm currently looking for an RS or if I can find one,IROC.

1. 16 or so around town, 24 or 5 on the road.
2. 5
3. Too long; reports vary wildly, but probably 8.0 0-60 and low 16s to very high 15s in the ¼ at best.
4. You got to be kidding! The Mustang in stock trim is more than 2 seconds faster than the RS. The RS is not a performance car as it comes from the factory. You're comparing a 170 HP 3400 lb car to a 240 HP 3100 lb car. They're not even close.
5. About the most I've ever been able to cram into mine is just over 15.

If you want to beat your friend, get a 90,91, or 92 350 car and do some mild mods. If it were me, I'd get the nicest one that I liked the most even if it was a mint and mild 305 vs. a clapped out but blazing fast 350 I'd probably take the 305. Just get whatever you like the most, or nothing if there's not anything good, and I wouldn't get into a bidding war.

Somewhat different story but still mostly the same. For the manual trans version:
1. About the same.
2. Same.
3. high 6s to low 7s 0-60, high 14s to low 15s ¼.
4. Closer but still a long way off: 210 HP/3400 lb (16.2 lb/HP) vs. 240 HP/3100 lb (12.9 lb/HP) You're down to only about a second slower in the ¼ though. At least you can still see it when it beats you.
5. Same
Don't bother with a RS if you want speed. Get a Z28. It will cost you far more than the difference, to make up the difference; plus the Z28 comes with better gears, better brakes, better wheels, better everything. The only way to get a 350 is with an auto trans; it is marginally faster than the 305/5-speed, maybe .2 each 0-60 and ¼.
OOPS! how about lb/HP?? Makes a bit more sense that way!

About the only thing good about the TBI 305 is that it's extremely reliable. I've seen a couple with over 200,000 miles on them. They will go the distance!

I have a 91 RS with the 305 TBI and the engine has SLP headers-3" exhaust and the NO air cleaner. Trans is auto with SLP shift kit and a hypertech thermo chip. With my trans before rebuild ran a 16.8 because darn thing didn't shift. It was barely catching, at the end of the 1/4 I had just shifted into 3rd. It was the smoothest shift I ever had too this day :-). My friend had the same trans problems with his 3 speed th350. The trans would shift from 1st to 3rd and it was the slowest shift ever and he ran a 14.3 ET. After we rebuilt the trans it ran a 13.1 ET. As you can see the trans slip is a huge difference so try and guess what I would have gotten. I think I would have been 15.4-15.6 if not better. I also was spinning the tires every launch...give me a break, it was my first time ever at a track and it had to be Englishtown raceway :-). Those are good times.
I'd say go for the z28 if you don't plan on swapping in a 350 yourself. On the other hand you can pick up RS camaro's for less and put just that much more into them to get a higher hp 350. As for the z28 having better brakes etc.? How is that so? I thought the only difference was an optional rear disc and a 1LE option (corvette front brakes). How much difference is there between a 91 RS and z28?

Go with the Z28 for one main reason: You don't want TBI. People complain that they "only" have a 305 to go along with their TPI Z28, but really they have nothing to be complaining about. The TBI is what u want to steer clear of, because even a 305 TPI has the potential very fast.
TPI leaves a lot to be desired on the top end, but for the price we pay for these things, they are very good, and have great potential. If you just want a car that has a V8 that you can throw a cat back and headers onto and people will know you have a V8, then go with the RS. But if you want that, but at the same time, something that can truly be fast, then go with the Z28.
After some research, I think you'll find that what you want is a Z28.

Are you planning to modify the engine or leave it stock? If you plan on changing heads, cam, exhaust anyway, there's no reason not to get TBI, it will outperform TPI unless you only measure low rpm torque. If you're staying stock go with TPI, the TBI engines got the worst excuses for heads, cam, and exhaust manifolds ever put in an engine.
