It is located between the plenum and intake manifold, toward the back of the engine. It's hard to see because the plenum's in the way. It is round, about 3" in diameter, shaped kinda like a flying saucer.

Sorry, don't know if it's the same on a carb'd 87 or how to test. If it needs replacing though, the plenum's got to be removed. The egr itself is controlled by a (computer controlled) solenoid located on pass. side near the distributor, that is a possible point of failure. IIRC it has vacuum and electrical connections.

FYI my car runs fine even though egr is not working. If I cruise at highway speeds for 10 minutes or so my SES light comes on, indicating egr problem. This means exhaust is not being re-circulated when it's supposed to and the computer (I forget which sensor it uses to do this) lets me know. Since I do most of my driving in-town, I have put off repairing it.

You may be able to access the EGR valve vacuum hose at the EGR solenoid. However, the EGR valves on a TPI are typically a negative backpressure valve, requiring a differential pressure in the exhaust system to operate. Simply connecting a vacuum source and pumping it to open the valve won't really reveal anything, since the EGR won't hold any vacuum without the exhaust pressure difference.

You can test the operation of the EGR solenoid and temperature sensor without removing the plenum. Teh solenoid is near the disreibutor, as is the connector for the temperature switch.

You can also follow this flow chart to diagnose your system:
