just wondering...couldn't remember if the LT1 was completely different or not...I know the LS1 is, but figured I'd ask because I can get a pretty nice deal on some.

the heads will bolt right up. you may have a problem with the center 2 intake bolt holes not matching the intake. i believe they're drilled straight down on the lt1 heads and at an angle on the 86 and earlier heads. not a big deal you can get the intake drilled to match the heads if you have to.

Don't forget about the reversed cooling that the LT1's have. This would be your biggest problem. I do believe the water passages are all different.

Good Luck,

They bolt up, but the internals are completely different. The water passages, the air passages, etc, wont line up. Stick with parts for regular small block chevy's.

Craze,

Define "nice deal", please. Are the heads iron or aluminum? The cooling passages are quite different, and the intake would have to be changed with the heads, as well as having to add the rear coolant crossover tube to both heads.

If you like the flow and design of the LT1 heads, the Vortec heads are basically clones of the LT1 alunimum heads with cooling and exhaust passages designed for older engines. All the flow, none of the headaches.

aluminum LT1 heads(per pair) are $300+ on camaroZ28.com all the time. I don't think you can convert the iron LT1 heads because there is welding involved. Since the Vortecs came out there is no reason to convert the LT1s(GenII) to a GenI block unless you are really bored. If you do want to do it I have the article on how to on my website.
