Comp Xtreme Energy cams

I was flipping through my Comp Cams catalog. They say most of their cams are ground 4 degrees advanced but there's very little mentioned about the Xtreme Energy cams. Are these cams ground advanced also or straight up?

They're mostly set up with the intake lobe centered at 106º. I'm not sure whether you'd consider that advanced or not; I think these days you probably would, since the factory changed theirs by way of the timing set sometime around 1970 to 4° retarded from where they used to be, for emissions purposes, and have retained that to this day. Most of Comp's performance grinds are with the inake at 106°; their factory repro grinds are at 108° or 110°.

Are you looking for suggestions as to where one might best be installed?

Stephen,

My year-old Comp Xtreme is ground with a 4° advance over the stock LT1 pattern. From that, you might presume that many of them are, but call Comp to find out for sure, or go to theire site and pull a cam card.

I'll take your word for it. The catalog mentions that the High Energy, Pure Energy, Dual Energy and Magnum cams are ground 4 degrees advance. However very little is mentioned on the Xtreme Energy cam. I could only assume it is also ground advanced. I installed mine straight up. My timing set allows for an additional 2 degrees.

I've got an Xtreme Energy cam, and the docs for it mention that it too is ground 4 degrees advanced.

IIRC the Magnum, High-Energy, and all those are also ground with a 106° intake center; so the XE series are the same as the rest of those.

Which one are you considering?

I've already considered and installed my cam in my big block. I went with the XE294H-10. I was just curious if it was ground advanced or not. The cam card quotes the timing specs for a cam installed at 106 intake center line however I never degreed my cam on installation to know if the valve timing on the cam card is considered straight up or 4 degrees advanced.

Nice consideration!! IMHO that is probably the best thing to do in any case, then tune it from there if it seems necessary.
