looking to add hp to a 305 and need help
Hey,
i'm a ford man and have never worked on a chevy before, so i'm new to what works and does not work. ok so here are a few questions i have,
first off my car is a 84 with a auto and cc quadrajet on a 305, i want to change the manifold and heads and carb and maybe distributor. but my car has a computer, i first wanted ot just get rid of the computer but that looks like alot more work then just working with the computer.
so i need opioions on heads and intakes for this car,
also i was wonder can you run a different carb in place of the qudrajet? if not what do i need to do? sorry for the long post but i need some help from the chevy gurus.
thanks to all that help. and i hope this makes sence.

If you like engine work, put in a retro fit roller cam. You can find more info in the archives about heads, carbs and ECMs. There is a good thread right now in the TPI section that talks about heads for a 305, I think that it is called 305 build-up or something like that.

heh its not too hard... GM made it EASY on us.... only 2 wires.
get a stand alone HEI distributor.. everything, EVEN THE COIL is in it... you just drop it in the hole like you do with any ford distrib... only our distrib hole is a PITA cause its in the back.. lol.
hook up power to the coil, and the tach wire to the tach terminal.. thats it.
if you're running a electric choke, the choke will need to be wired to ignition.. i usually run a wire back to near the drivers feet underhood... theres a couple rubber grommets there... go thru one of them and plug into the fuse box.
all of the gauge sensors are stand alone from the ECM... so if you want, at this point you can unplug the bulb for the ECM and drive the car.... doing it this way allows you to swap back to the stock stuff if you ever go to sell the car.
the manifold and heads are like any other ford motor... just use a book to get the TQ specs and sequance.
not too hard at all... if you've done head swapps before, it should only take a weekend...

When considering whether to change to non-CC system, you need to answer this question: "Do I want to go faster, or just spend more money?"
If the former, leave the carb alone and spend your money where it will make a difference. If the latter, go ahead and spend the money where it will make a difference, then spend some more changing to non-CC.
Unless this is a race-dedicated car, there is no excuse for going non-CC (unless you've rendered your CC carb FUBAR so you have an excuse). If it's a race-dedicated car, there is no excuse for keeping the 305.
Lest you think I don't know from 1st-hand experience, the sig...

well the carb is FUBARed all right, its been rebuilt and still runs like ****, it runs strong till the secondairys open then it bogs like a *****, i would like to keep the computer stuff i guess if it easyer, i have a 14" K&N on the car and i have headman supercomp long tubes in my garage and i allready have no cat and a flowmaster catback on the car. so i assume then i should just buy another cc q-jet and get a cam and add those S/x heads??? can someone give me a link to these heads. and what can you recomend for a intake manifold with a cc q-jet? thanks alot you guys sure are helpful. and your right about the distributor i hate how its in the back, but i can get used to it. also does anyone know where i can find a rebuild kit for this motor? it has 200,000 miles and needs a rebuild some time soon, i'm doing the tranny next week and adding a shift kit.

athough id be looking for a 350 block to swap in its place.. first place id call would be your local machine shop... just go down the list in the phonebook..... if you're lucky, they might have a shortblock already made for you.

i agree with some, there is no need to change the dist/carb, i'm running a ccc q-jet, i changed the jets and hangers, if yours bogs while opening the 4bbl, it isnt adjusted correctly or you need a different set of rods /hanger, since you already have exhaust, change the heads/cam that's where you'll see a big improvement

Do you need the car for winter driving? Not likely as you live in Florida, eh? An Edelbrock Performer is good for 20 extra hp, while a Weiand Stealth about 30 or so, etc.
It is not worth rebuilding a 305. Just junk it and get a 350. Much time and $$$ ahead when all is said and done.
But the 305 heads are real gems for a home port and polish, both performance and $$$ wise
Follow the link at the end of my sig for the low down.
Actually, everything in my sig will work very well for your 305, or a 350 if the 305 has bitten it.

I agree with five7kid that replacing the carb first would be a waste of money because there are alot of other things on our 305 cars that require attention first.
First off you need to find out if your car has an lg4 305 or l69 305.I dont believe that they made l69's (high output 305's) with automatics but you'll have to check your VIN# to be sure.Go to the 8th digit and if it's an "H" than you have the low out LG4.I'm sorry but I forget what that digit would be for the L69 HO 305,but like I said I'm pretty sure they only came with sticks(someone correct me if I'm wrong please).
On the lg4 cars the exhaust MUST go first, everthing from the manifolds to the tips, this is the most restrictive thing and will hold back any other mods you make. When replacing it dont order anything made for any lg4 car,get a 3 inch hooker or flowmaster cat back with part #'s for a 350tpi car.Get a 3 inch high flow cat and some nice headers,Hooker #2055 seem to be popular,do a search on the exhaust board.
After that ,if you have 2.73 gears in the back look to switching to 3.42's . Then call the tech lines at comp cams or crane cams and get there advice for a good streetable cam.Lg4's only have 8.6 to 1 compression so you'll probably have to stay a little conservative on the cam or you'll lose alot of low end power.
You're gonna be kinda limited on what heads you can choose from. Some people have head good success with porting there stock heads.Do a search like "porting 416 or 081 heads" and see what comes up.After market heads ,world 305 torquer heads seem to be the way to go.You have to get something with 58cc combustion chambers or you'll hurt your already low compression. Some people have gone with aluminum corvette heads with 58cc chambers but aluminum heads with the low compression of the lg4 is not a good match.
As far as your cc qjet there is a great tech artical on modifying it.
Hope this helps .Good luck!

thanks for the help guys, i already have the exhuast done so i dont have to worry about that. i had no idea the cc q-jet's problem was something alot of people have. i rebuilt mine and wondered why whe you juice it it pulles hard then the 2ndairies open and it bogs a bit then kinda goes faster but still feels like its boging a bit. so i'm goona go check into this. and i would kind alike to keep the 305, everyone has a 350 ad i wanna use my stock motor. i tought of maybe running a 400 small black, but decided i would rather use my 305. its funney when you own people with a 305.

If it runs well until the secondaries start to open, then you may have a rare but heard-of worn-out secondary air valve cam. With the engine off, pull the air cleaner, use a finger to push down on the back of the large butterflys on the back of the carb. There is a fork-shaped "hanger" inbetween the two butterflys that should come up as the butterflys open. If not, or the rods that hang on the "hanger" don't move up (one rod for each side), that's your problem.
