difference in 305tpi 700-r4/t5
hey, this may sound like a sort of a newbie question here, but i was just noticin a difference in advertised hp with the 305tpi mated with the 700-r4 compared to the "same" motor but with the 5spd...was there a different, higher lift cam in the "5-speeds 305" over the "automatic's 305"? i just noticed that one engine was listed as 195hp(auto), and 215hp(5spd)...this was in the 1988 model year in particular(that i saw, i'm sure its the same throughout other years as well). thx ppl

Yeah, the 5spds got a bigger cam, 215hp in 87, 220 in 88. Then in 89 if you got the 5spd and the G92 package with better gears you got the dual catalytic converter setup that upped power to 230hp, still 220hp for single cat cars. For 91-92 if you got the 5spd but without G92 you got the smaller cam and a now 205hp rating. There is some argument over whether or not they actually had the smaller cam however... Some have claimed to have removed the stock cams and spec'd them out to be the better cam anyway...
GM had basically the same good cam in the 305 TPI autos in 85, with 215hp. For 86 they just chucked 25hp out the window by throwing in a small cam for 190hp. And it's not just a little smaller, it is a complete piece of crap cam. What kind of crap is that, what a great "upgrade" from 85 to 86, lol... I would assume it was to meet some emissions crap, but I refuse to believe they couldn't do anything other than use the infamous "peanut cam" in the hottest motor for 86...
