96+ Vortec blocks

What is diffarant about the Vortec truck blocks and regular roller cam blocks? I was looking at Edlebrock Vortec manifolds, and on some they say they are fitted with a water pump bypass boss for the 96+ blocks. Why, what did they change?

Not all, but some blocks do not have the little bypass hole at the bottom of the water pump mounting....those would require the bypass they refer to.
