Cylinder Head ID
Cylinder Head ID
Greetings, everyone. I need some help with IDing the heads on my 350 (that is to be the 383). They are not original, but I guess I will still tell you that the block is from a 1970 3500 truck. My teacher showed me the little design on the back of the heads that tells you what engine they are for. Mine have two humps in them, which seem to be the camel hump heads that everyone says are nice. I will try to emulate them:

It is like that, but the top line is one curvy line that doesn't dip too low in the middle, and never flattens out. Any ideas what these are? Any specs would be helpful. And I suppose I should get the casting numbers - would that help more?

Oh no, that little doodle sure did't work. Anyway, it is just two humps with a shallow dip in the middle, no corners or flat lines on top. Are these the heads from a 396/365 carbed or 396/375 FI, or something else totally different? Also, any ideas on valve sizes and chamber volume? Thanks in advance!

Camel humps were available on 302, 327 and 350 (IIRC) H.O. engines in the '60s. Some had 2.02"/1.60" valves while others had 1.94"/1.50". If you are going to run in a racing class that requires these heads (or similar), then go ahead and use them. If this is for your street car, I would advise against them. For one, they might not have the correct accessory bolt pattern for you vehicle. Secondly, most aftermarket/newer cast irons will blow them away and can be cheaper (ie: Vortecs). Those side symbols are not an acurrate way of decifering cylinder heads, the ONLY true way is the casting numbers located in the rocker stud area. Usually a 6 or 7 digit number. Post them and I (or other SBC pros) can acurrately tell you what heads they are.

They could be...
If you turned the "double-hump" marking on its side, it would look something like this:

__)
What is the casting #? That will tell for sure.
396 heads won't fit a 350 so it's not any of those for sure. Also there was never a FI 396.
