Looking to have my stock L98 heads reworked. By that I mean mild port/polish, three angle valve job, slightly larger valves (maybe), and machined for larger valve springs to run the ZZ4 or equivilent cam. Basically I'm wondering if it would be better to go aftermarket. I know that I'd get more horsepower but if I can get the head work done for around 400 or so I think I'll stick to stock. What do you think? Thanks.

 

Valves alone, in the box, are right at $200. Even without any port work, I doubt you can get the machine work you mention done for less than $250. If you are going to put in larger springs and try to run a big cam, you need the one most important thing of all, which you have left out: screw-in studs. By the time you do all that you will have about $600-650 in those heads.

But if all you're going to put in it is the ZZ4 cam or something else similarly tame, just a new set of high quality 1.25" springs will work fine.

This is why sometimes it makes more sense to go directly to the aftermarket and not fool around with dumping money into inferior castings.

I did my 305 heads, and even added 25 hours of my own labor, to boot! I spent $460, and did all of the bowl work myself.

if I had to do it over again, I would have bought a NEW aftermarket set.
