Occasional Starting Problem
I have a problem with starting my 86 Sport Coupe once in a while, once it is warmed up
The lights, radio, etc., all work fine but the starter won't spin or even make a sound. All I get is this funny buzzing from under the dash. So I pulled out the offending harness to discover it has a regular signal flasher, two relay looking boxes (one white the other green) and a circuit board mounted at a 90* angle on the end.
I replaced the green relay type box last year, when the choke light kept coming on in the idiot lights. It buzzed at that time, too. But that fixed the starting problems last time.
This time it is a different sounding buzz and it is coming from the circuit board thing. It has the round black disc shaped object mounted to it and that is what is buzzing.
Does anyone know what this is called? Anyone ever have this problem? Know of the proper fix?
As I said, it only does this once in a while but I must sort this out

A pic would be great. It sounds like you may have a bad STARTER RELAY. I would inspect that, and also get the starter tested, the humming you hear may be coming from the starter motor and just misleading. Hope that helps.

Quick,
Thanks for your reply.
I'm not quite sure what it is or where the starter relay may reside. I have the F-body parts manual of CD but it just doesn't give a good picture of this electonic component set that resides under the dash, to the right of the steering wheel. I believe it is called the "courtesy box"--a better name would the "cursed box"!
Grrr!
It did it to me again today at my sawbone's office. Even 3 hours later it wouldn't start
Gonna go back in an hour or so and see what happens ... oh what an annoyance ...

Well, after sitting 9 hours it still won't start, so MAYBE whatever has gone wrong is now permanent.
That would sure make it easier to diagnose. I'm kind of half expecting that it wqill start right up in the morning and continue to plague me
Anyway, here is a picture of the two relays that were in the courtesy box. I replaced the green one last year, but who knows, eh?
It is this small circuit board that sits right beside them which is making the buzzing noise.

The item that you are describing sounds like the audible alarm system that goes off when you have the door open with the key in the ignition, or open the door with headlights on.
