Bumping up the timing?

When I had the guy make my chip I told him that it was set at 8* so he said that he put the initial timing at 8*....and then advanced it from there..

what would happen if I raise the timing from my base of 8* would it screw up the timing?...I dont get spark knock at the 8* so I think I can set it for more..

whadda you think?

You can try giving it a degree or two more and see what happens. The timing wont be the same as whats called for but people do it all the time. See if it helps any.

I know that the factory setting is 6*..but I had the timing set at 8* on the chip and then the advance starts from there. What would happen if I raised the timing to say 10* but the chip thinks its at 8*.....
thats like if you was to get a off the shelf chip they always tell you to set the car back to factory 6* cause the chip will advance it.

So if I had it start at 8 what would happen if I bumped it up? Would it throw the whole chip into a frenzy and not know what to do with the timing?

Teh computer has no idea what the actual timing at the distributer is. It only knows what you tell it. If you bump it up, youll have whatever advance is called for by the computer, plus the additional degrees of base time that you add in over the base time set in the chip. Wont cause any problems, but be careful how far you set it otherwise you could start getting detonation in certain spots.

I'd leave it at 8*, plug in a scanner and look for knocking. If it doesn't knock then you could advance in 1* or 2* increments and check for knocking again. My car doesn't have a chip yet, and my initial timing is set at 12* or 13* without knocking. You could ask the guy who burnt the chip how much advance will you get from the chip.
