X-bars off?

The bars you must take off in the front to change cams;are they very important?
Do you have to put them back on or can you save weight and space?
Thanks

Well.... Mine have been off for a couple years now, they were in the way of my cooling fans I added. They probably add a little strength to the already weak radiator support, but I didnt notice anything.

They don't seem to be very sturdy, I question their load bearing properties but I don't think GM put them there beccause they look good either. I would just put them back and not think about them again. Let them do whatever it is that they do.......
