OK....Girl friend Lost keys.....$250 for a new one.....HELP!!

ok...is there a way i can just rig something to start my car with a push button...no ignition key whatsoever? i can get in the car no prob...have a spare alarm chirper, but i dont have a spare ignition key. I know i can bypass VATS and just use a standard key....but im too cheap to spend the money to have a locksmith key it.(125)(AAA will pay for 60 of it). ill do it as a last resort...but can i rig a starter switch??? thanks. PLEEZ HELP

Yea I mean a push button start is just asking to have your car ripped off.

l'll second what 82recarota said. Take your VIN to the Dealer. They should be able to cut one w/o much trouble.

Yah you can rig a starter switch if you bypass VATS. I think an auto parts store even has a remote starter kit.

did you look in your owners manual to see if the original owners had wrote down the key code?

BB,

Why don't you go to the parts store, buy a new ignition lock cylinder for $15.00, and install it. Bypass teh VATS if you want to, but you'll at least have a new cylinder with two keys.

Or am I missing something here?

try a different dealer.. i had a similar problem with a 89 ta i had.. lost the key, the dealer was about to cut a key from the VIN, but still didnt know what VATs chip it needed.. they have a box they can use to test to find out which chip you need.. i lucked out and had a buddy workin there that let me borrow the box, but if you cant get that lucky, if they know they can do it ya could always have AAA tow the car in for ya..

i work for a autoparts store. id have to order the cylinder.

i got a mechanical key made (20) bucks. now i can turn the key to on. Can i start the car like that. with a remote starter switch. RED clip, BLACK clip, button. if so what do i attach it to on the solenoid? which screws. or do i have to bypass VATS still. if so....can someone pleez give me a better description than what is on the tech section. where do i get a resistor RADIO SHACK? i went to the dealer...and had chevy roadside send in the codes to cut the key....they cut it...but they supposedly dont have the code for the pass key. thanks. let me know.

Look in the tech articles about how to rig a push button starter...it's really easy actually - get a long length of 2 guage wire, some 14 ga. primary wire, a starter solenoid, and a button switch. I'm actually in the process of fabbing an magnetically enabled push button start switch (hidden of course) with shaved door lock cylinders and remote door lock access. It should be sweet when done. All you need to do is run the 2 guage from your positive terminal on the starter (the one with the already huge wire going to it, then run a second wire from the terminal on the solenoid that the purple ( i think, not 100% sure but check that article) wire and put the switch between them. That should get you through the weekend and should only take an hour or two to rig up. good luck.

theres more to getting around VATS then that.. any worthy dealer should be able to find out which pill your key needs..

Agreed; go to another dealer. Call all over the state if you have to.

[edit] Actually, maybe, call out of state! Call until you find someone that will do it- then you know we're not jerking your chain, AND that the dealers in your area are lying. I think if you search http://www.yahoo.com you can find the Yellow Pages online...

I'm not sure what dealer said they need the computer chip number from you, What you need to tell them is to call Gm using the Tracs 2000 system and they input your VIN number over the phone and will receive a fax back usualy about 10-15 minutes that has the key cut numbers and the VATS code number and they can cut it from that, all you need is to show proof of ownership of the car. The VATS keys are ony about $28.00

You're not going to by-pass VATS unless you have a key that you can read the resitance from. Once your computor knows that resistance, it won't accept anything else. I don't think the dealer can tell you the key resistance, they only know it by a code to which they can provide a key of the correct resistance. BTW, even if you could do all this with a pushbutton, how do you plan to get around the steering wheel lock & release the steering wheel?

I would just have a locksmith make a new key for it, when its made just go to the dealership and they can use the non chip'd key to cut the new key w/chip. I'd rather do that then spend time trying to rid a remote started or changing lock cylinders. Also too if you have an air bag if you hit a wrong wire even with a test light you can set off your air bag.
