Did I mess something up?????

Yesterday I was doing some work on my car and had the rear of the car on jackstands.the raer of the car was about a foot and a half off the ground and the fornt end of the car was on the ground. I go to start my car while the wheels where off the ground, Not knowing if this is allright to do or not, and as soon as I turn the key I hear this loudass grinding sound and immediatly turn the key off. Then i smell something burning. Should I be worried about any damage to anything? What was the gringing sound and what was the smell?? It sounded like from the transmission area but I am not sure(Its an 700r4).

I'm guessing it has to be a coincident, when you have the jack stands under the rearend housing, it's the same as having the tires on the ground anyway.

What kind of work did you do to the car?

I was doing brake work. I guess your right. It would be the same as having the rear wheels on the ground. I dont know what would have caused that noise and burning smell though.
