7 questions about AFR heads
7 questions about AFR heads
I'm looking into the AFR 190 or 195 heads for my 1988 L98 GTA. My car is stock other than MSD ignition, ported plenum (upper), SLP Headers, Flowmaster Catback, 100,000 miles.
I have a the following questions:
1. (most important) With this setup, will I need to use higher than 87 octane gas, and how much MPG will I lose.
2. I drive my car everyday, with these heads will I lose any driveability?
3. What makes them so much better than other brands such as Twisted Wedge, and Edelbrock.
4. Are they cast iron or aluminum?
5. With my setup how much of hp / torque will I gain?
6. How hard are they to install, can I do it in my driveway?
7. Are there any concerns or comments about these heads or maybe reccomendations that would better fit my needs?
Thank you for all that reply!!!

1)If you get 'em with 64cc chambers you'll have the same compression you've got now. If you run 87 octane now, then it should still work. I doubt you'll loose any mileage due to the heads alone, but you might loose some to the increase of hard driving that is inevetable with a new set of high performance heads.
2)doubt it.
3)They flow like a crazy *****-f***a.
4)aluminum
5)?
6)A head swap is pretty involved, unless your more proficient with a wrench than I am, your probably lookin' at about a weekend (if the weather cooperates).

...those are very nice heads, but they are a bit pricey. With the other mods you've got, on a 100K+ motor and unless you're planning on some more serious mods and/or some heavy duty dragstrip action, why don't you consider the TFS 23 degree heads for similar flow numbers at a bunch of fewer $$$. The bucks you save would pay for a rebuild job or a new cam, injectors and throttle body...
