California Emissions - what was different
A 1987 Iroc with a 305 TPI, 5 speed with California Emissions. What would be different on this car compared to non-California Emissions.

I don't know specifics, but in general they didn't allow as aggressive of tuning, which typically lowered both power and economy along with the emissions.
I have a '91 Bonneville 49-states base model, and a '90 Bonneville SSE California model. The '91 has a lower ratio drive (fewer RPMs at highway speed), gets much better mileage, and will jump all over the SSE off the line. I need to put the two emissions test results side-by-side to see if there's any difference there.

I have an '87 Formula with the same engine/tranny combo that you have, but mine wasn't built for CA. My sources say that GM didn't offer a CA emissions version for this combination in 1987. But the acdelco website shows a CA chip for my car, and say you have one. Does yours have a factory RPO code? So unless GM created a chip for it later, I guess my sources are wrong.
Mine was supposedly "converted" when I moved here in 1990. But we just foundout a few years ago when the DMV returned many people's money for those early '90s conversions(though I never got my $300 back), that was a farce.
According to the dealer who converted my car, they changed the smog canister, ignition, and chip, maybe more, but I'm not sure. But I did a major "power" tune-up on the car recently, and ALL those original FED parts were still on my car. And my car's always passed our emissions tests--though it supposedly "didn't" in 1990. So I'd say I was scammed.
I'll admit, they must've done something to it because it's never run as well since. It never ran poorly, just not like it did then. But it runs like new again now.
