what could cause this

when my car is in park or netrual it is fine but when i but it in gear it vibrates something awful i was wondering if the torque converter could be locking up at low rpms just wondering any info would help
no mods stock 305 h code

It would seem that if the TC was locking up then it would cut off instead of idling.

Does it shake badly all the time? Or just when it's idling? If it's just when it's idling it may be the IAC.. it's worth cleaning/checking/setting anyways, it made my car idle a lot better. There's a technical article on how to do it; it's not that hard.

the iac is the idle air control

does your car only do it when idleing, or does it do it when driving too?

Sounds like the IAC then. The IAC's really easy to set, it just takes a torx bit and a paperclip. If it's never been set before you may have to use a punch or a screwdriver to punch out a cap meant to discourage adjustments. You can go ahead and set the TPS while you're at it, but that requires a few more tools. Either way, there's a good technical article on how to do both.
