383 build up Q's regarding block.....

I just did a search looking for some info, but haven't found it yet.
Here's the story...I've got the original L98 block in my '92 torn down...it's ready to be removed. I've pretty much decided on a Scat 4340 383 rotating assembly, but my questions are now about the block. I went to my machine shop the other day to get prices on block work. To get the block splayed for 4 bolt caps is $350 in labor, plus the cost of the caps. I've got a budget to get the short block rebuilt, so that seems like not a likely option. For the top end I've got AFR 195's with all the options, a Miniram II intake, CC pro magnum RR's and lifters etc....SLP cam. Obviously I'd like to get as much power as possible....realistically it'll hopefully be in the 400h/400tq range. I'm gonna be running approx. 10:5:1 compression on the engine. The engine will occassionally see 6000rpms at the track.
Here's the question....is it best to stay with my original L98 2 bolt roller block, or are there better options available such as a used 4 bolt? How much more power can the stock 4 bolt take vs. the L98? What block codes should I look for? Are there blocks exactly the same as the L98 but with 4 bolt mains to look for?

Thanks for the help.....the machine work is gonna be around $650 and the rotating assm. is probably gonna be around $1500, so there's not much $$$ left in my budget for the short block.

Your L98 block will be good enough. A 400-450 HP 5500-6000 RPM motor will do just fine with 2 bolt main caps and studs.

IMO, its better to go to 4 bolt mains if you are going past 400hp.

splayed mains are stronger then linear factory mains, personally I bought the caps lined em up tapped the holes installed my arp studs then took it to the machine shop to have it line bored.. way cheaper then paying a shop to do all the work, that route may be a good cost effective solution for you.
