What does this A.I.R. crap actually do?

Now my car passed emissions without a catalytic converter. My question is, if it will pass with a converter and no AIR equipment. By deleting the smog pump and all the other crap that is associated with it. Just so I can clean the engine compartment up.

It will probably pass, but you have to get a different cat. Ours are made for AIR injection, and they will clog up without it. You can buy older style catalytic convertors which dont require air injection. My car passed fine as a 305, sniffer test and all. The limit for low and high speed emissions (here in dallas cnty) is 200 hydrocarbons. I passed the high speed (2800 rpm) sniffer test with 77 HC. I passed the idle (800 rpm) sniffer test with 156 HC. The funny thing is that its a small block 400! Granted, I did lean out the carb some before inspection, jsut to make sure I passed...

What the AIR does is inject air into the exhaust to complete combustion. When the exhaust leaves your heads and enters the headers, some of it is still unburned, so the Air Injection Reaction system injects air into the exhaust to burn the rest of the charge before it enters the cat. Air is also injected into the cat to further burn anything that may remain before it exits your tailpipes into Mother Nature. Also, the AIR tuben that enters the cat, aides in the reaction that occurs inside the converter. If you remove these components, unburned fuel will enter your catalytic converter and thus clog it very quickly, I also don't think you'll pass an expection. My friend and I went to have an emissions test done on his 85 Z28 and they did an expection to make sure he had his AIR equipment on there. So its not a for sure thing you can pass.
