loud whining from rear end

I can hear a loud whining noise from the rear of my car when its running. Is this normal? I am thinking its my fuel pump and maybe thats why my car is running like @#$%.
Also, How can I check my codes without a code reader? I was told that I dont need a reader. He said all I need is a paperclip. Please explain.

use a paper clip and ground the a and b terminal of the ALDL with the KOEO and you can count the flashed on the SES light to get any stored codes
