Which cylinder head for HSR 406?
I have been collecting parts and almost ready to buy a set of 200CC heads. I was about set to use a set of the pro toplines but have heard they are all but out of business. I have used Trick Flows on my mustang in the past with good results. Dart has always been a good choice for chevrolets and their price is attractive. AFR's are good but don't rather spend the extra money elswhere on the engine.
Engine will be in a 91Z with HSR, 700R4 with 2200 stall, 9.75:1 compression 406, 224/230 duration .480-.500 lift cam(not chosen, just guessing what I will use). I am guessing 450+ horseposer and torque and keep the rpm under 5800.
I guess I am down to TFS or Darts. Unless I can be persuaded on the remaining pro toplines or other comparable 200cc head. Thanks

as far as resonably priced out of the box heads go, i don't think you can top AFR's. The only down side I see to those is the wait, others can post on that, but i think they have about a 3 month back order.
but Dart has some real nice flowing heads around 200cc. might even want to look into the GMPP fastburns. seen some good results with those. And as far as pro topline out of business
i dunno, but there are some really happy people here running pro toplines as well.
Search around for flow numbers, and buy the best flowing heads that fit your budget.
www.chevyhiperformance.com has a whole database of cylinder head flow #'s might want to check there.

If I use a 72-74cc chamber I can keep compression at 9.62-9.75. If I went with a fastburn or 64cc I figured awhile back I would be pushing between 10.5-11:1 compression, a little high for a car I want to drive at times daily.
I already have the .030 speed pro coated hyper pistons with 4 valve reiefs so in hindsight the fastburns would be nice, just won't work with my combo.

Canfield. Canfield is as good as or better than Air Flow Reasearch for a street head. Compare the flow dataof the two heads, 195 vs 195. Canfield wins in flow and in price. Just at the $1,000 mark (depends where you get them) and aluminum.

I like the 210 AFRs for a big cube motor like that. Flow great, but as said the wait is horrible right now.

About protopline I heard online that the money guy behind the company got impatient and pulled the plug. I took it for what it was worth but when I emailed a seller on Ebay about some protoplines in a 200cc setup he said he was all out and couldn't get anymore. He went on to tell me that the 220's were all he had because protopline was out of business.
I talked to my machinist who liked the protoplines and he hadn't heard anything but we kinda live out in the boonies. He was surprised because they were at the last PRI show he went to.
I was checking out the Jegs 195's which are canfields from what I have found out. Where is a good place to buy the canfields for around 1K?

I had my machinist call and find out about protopline. They were in effect out of business for 2 weeks. And it did have to do with the importing of the heads to the U.S. For the money I am going to get a set of these.
