Largest 16 inch rear tire

I don't know if this is the right forum but here it goes. What is the largest 16 inch rear tire you can run without running into any rubbing issues? This is on a 92 z28. I'm running a 255/50/16 now but was wondering the above question. Don't want to look too ghetto though. I looked on tirerack.com and ran across some 285/55/16 & 285/60/16.

Lotsa guys run 275/40R-17s on their 3rd gens but the wheels have to heve just the right backspacing to keep from rubbing inside or outside. I imagine you could probably do something similar with 16" wheels if you measure carefully.

Remember an old school trick of "rolling" the inside of the fender lip to gain just a smidge more clearance on the outside. if you're not familar with how to do this- find someone who knows how as you can bend the outside part of the fender (the part you can see) if you do it wrong.

And remember you have to leave a little clearance to allow the tread to "squirm" side to side under lateral loads (cornering). The taller the sidewall (60 vs. 50 series, etc.) the more clearance you have to leave.
