Connector on Vaccum Canister?

This plug was unhooked on my car. What is it and what's it for? Here's a pic. Thank God for digital cameras!

Axle/Gears: 3.42

It gathers vapors from the gas tank and when the computer activates it (warmed up, not at idle) it burns them up to avoid HC emissions from the gas tank.
