Wipers over extending
Wipers over extending
When on "High", the wiper can actaully be seen outside the driver window. It wipes the entire window, but continues on to the painted area. It knicked up my brand new paint too. What would cause this?
86 2.8 - just the Low and High windshield wiper option, my dad was too cheap to spring for the variable speed
(Can i upgrade that if i have to buy some new parts?)

That's caused by Improper alignment of the wiper arms to the wiper shafts. Do your wipers look like they're down all the way when you turn them off?
Find the base of the wiper arm. (That's the side at the bottom of the windshield, not the end with the wiper blade on it.) "Under" each arm, at the base, there's a clip. ([edit] Okay, well, actually it's more like a lever than a clip. It's located on the wiper arm itself, not on the shaft.) You'll see it poking out around the edge of the base, about 1/8 inch. Pry it outwards with a screwdriver. This will release the wiper arm from the shaft. Pull the wiper arm off while trying to note it's original position. Go a few splines counter-clockwise, and push the wiper arm back on. This will cause the arm to not extend past the edge of the windshield. Move the clip back with a pair of pliers, and you should be good! You probably just have to do this with the driver's side wiper.
It's really easy to see; if I had a picture this message would be very short. Let me know how it goes, good luck!

isnt that wiper arm master splined? my 85 did the same thing, turned out the arm was worn out where it attaches to the post. it still worked since it had a large master spline, but it would sling the blade out as you mentioned.
