Why does my gas gauge read sideways?

Well, like the subject says, my gas gauge reads sideways and I don't know why. Does anyone know why?

Ok... think I get it now... It might be due to the fact that the needle is off. Did you take apart the dash? Try to recalibrate it by filling the tank and pulling and setting the needle to the full position.

I have taken apart my dash, but I have never touched the gas gauge. That's what I don't get. I have never taken the needle off at all. How does the needle come off?

it's just pressed on, mine are so worn from "re-calibrating" as mentioned above that some of them fall off at will (my speedo mostly) and I had to glue them on

Well, I fixed it. I just filled the tank up, pulled off the needle and put it on pointing to full. I just don't understand why it wasn't reading right because I've never pulled off the needle. Oh well, it works now. Thanks.
