It lives......I think

well as some of you know I bought my first thirdgen a few months ago , but needed the column changed but I ran in a few problems , and with my time and weather it took longer then I wanted ,
but today I managed to get the column 90% in , this was enough to try and start the car to see if the 86 column I bought would work in the 82 third gen I own.
everything matched up except for one cable which I;m unsure what is for , maybe some one can tell what it is for . it seem the cable comes from the column and goes to the auto shirfter which sits on the floor . when I move the shifter the cable also moves .

on the 82 column it bolted to the column and on the 86 it seems that to clips in to a white something or what ever . I don't know if this is needed or not . but if someone can tell me would be great.

Also last time I was working on the car with a friend he was nice enough to run the car out of gas so while I was trying to start it I cleaned the carb and the car doesn't seem to bogg down like it was doing before , so I can only conclude this was due to a really dirty cab , bad gas or just the car trying to **** me off.

well anything thoughts of my after noon or this mystery cable.

the cable/rod you are talking about that runs from the shifter to the steering column I presume, is probably an ignition lockout, so you can only start the car in park or neutral. If it isn't the samething I'm thinking of does anyone else know?

It is the neutral safety switch cable.. Don't know how it changed configurations over the years though..

first what two wires , and second there isn't anywires.
it's a single cable that runs from the column back to the shifter.

I belive the above post are right about this being a netural switch
as I can't see moving my shirter out of part to through all gears with having the cable move , but I will look in to it being the a cable for REV ..

I don't believe that the neutral safety switch is a cable. Atleast not on mine, there are a couple of contacts on the shifter that move with it to the different gear locations. On mine there are not any cable running between the two, mine is an 82.

My guess is that it might be the column lock mechanism. It might make sure that the column can only lock when the tranny is in park, so you can still steer if somebody shuts the key off.

oh that might be very true , is yours a black cable that gets bolted to the top side of the column ???
where as the 86 column i grabbed clips in to a white box that also gets cliped to the column. I think once i figure out what the cable is for I might go buy the cable that belongs on the 86 and mount it in , assuming it's the same lenght which I would think it is . or grab one from a pick your part. since all the columns are always gone already it should be easier to get to.

ok , great anyone know how much this part normally is ? or have a part number say for the 86 , I have looked at newer model columns as well and they seemed to have the same setup , so I thinking the price for the cable will be about the same.

it's the shifter lock cable so you can take it out of park without the key turned.

ok I have been looking for this part tonight , (the cable)
but I haven't had any luck just yet, anyone know where I can get this cable .
I removed the cable , it mounts to the front part of the shifter if this helps at all.
I also noticed that the shifter does if fact move while the ignition is locked.
