Power Steering pump removal ?

I have 2 TBI motors one has a one piece stamped steel mount assy for all the acc. ,,AC, Alternator, Power steering, air pump.

This one I removed without a problem.

The other has 2 Aluminum housings 1 each side, I would like to remove the mount that supports the alternator and power steering pump. but I cannot figure out how, it looks like there are 2 bolts behind the power stering pump that need to be removed to get the aluminum housing off.

Do I need to get a pully puller to remove the pully from the power steering pump before I can remove the housing ?????
Or am I missing something here ?

thanks any way guy's I finally found what I needed to know on the TPI board.

Ie Smaller finger style puller instead of the large style (which will bend the pully)

I'm in the same boat as you. How did you get the pulley off of the power steering pump. Did you have to use a gear puller? Or do you use a 3/8 hex to lock the spindle and turn it off?

Well like I said I used a smaller finger style puller
the fingers fit on the groove on the inside hub I guess you would call it (so your pulling more from the inside of the pulley instead of the outside)
I dont know if that makes sense or not, if not ask I will try to clarify

you want a picture of the the puller I used, I can do that
just let me know

I have the craftsman 2 jaw puller. I think that should do it. It is the smaller one they have available.

Sometimes those pulleys are really stuck on there. If the jaw style doesn't work (be careful to not ruin the small hub) there is a puller made just for P/S pump pulleys. About $15US at pep-boys. It is a clamshell style that grips around the whole circumference of the hub.

I think so, you dont need a very large one, just one that the jaws will fit in that outer groove

let me know if UR having problems, I am at work now but go home for lunch and can take a pic of puller on the pulley for clarification.

Cool that will be helpful. I won't be able to touch it until tomorrow

I don't have a PepBoys anywhere close, but I'm sure I could find someone with it.

Bad night in the garage

Well talk about bad night in the garage. I got out the puller to try to get this pulley off. It was a no go. I ended up bending the pulley a little. So now I'm counting on having to replace it. So I decide to just get the thing off of there. It is on so tight I break the puller, actually the nut shot of the arm bolts. Well damn. I guess I will just work on sandblasting some parts I already have out. The quick connect on the air hose died. I won't hook up to anything. So now I just work on masking the engine and getting it ready for paint. Nothing can wrong with that.

Just when I'm about to leave, I go inside and the cat has taken a big fat dump in the kitchen floor. Talk about the icing on the cake.

Luckily the puller is a Craftsman, so a trip to Sears and I should be good to go. I just priced the pulley at Autozone. It's only $15.

Alright, now what. I still can't get this pulley to budge.

I have thrown penetrating lube, and heat to this pulley. I am using an impact to drive the puller and I still can't get it to move. Is it possible that this is not a pull type? My maro is a 91.

The pulley is already shot. I was thinking that since the pulley bends fairly easy that maybe with it bending using the puller is causing the pulley to pinch on the shaft. What do you guys think? At this point I guess I'm just going to buy the new pulley, see what it looks like, and ask to rent the correct puller.

I'm open to any other input guys.

Thanks.

Yes I was puling from the outside. But as much as I've thrown at it, I would think that it would have moved somewhat.

yea, I thought the same thing, but then I realized there is too much flex in that pulley, and its too tight on the shaft so I stopped before I damaged it and got different pulley

well like ya said they are cheap
the one good thing is that we both know better the next time
As long as we learn from our mistakes the next time it will be easy !

PS Help

autozone's powersteering pulley rental tool worked perfect for me twice. I usually just ask them if I can use their vice and do it in the store so I dont have to rent it (i live 30mins from autozone). Try theirs out!

PS. I need some help. I think my powersteering pump (3months old) is leaking out the line attatched (threaded) to the botom of resivour. I forget if there is an o-ring on that line, or if I should just remove and put teflon tape on the threads?????

suggestions.....

This is the puller I am using. Do you think it will work or should I get the Autozone rental? How much is the Autozone rental?

that puller looks nothing like the one i used. Autozone doesnt charge. Just put the deposit down and bring it back and you get your money back. its free rentals there.

Id try autozones, but when you pick it up ask them to describe how you use it. It may not appear to be too straightfoward when you try it, so they could save you some time if they can show you how to use it b4 you go home.

I just got a new pulley. It is a $40 deposit for the tool. Since I want to sand blast and paint the bracket i opted to just have them pull it and replace it. I didn't want to tie up $40 for a week or so.
