Where is the temp sensor?
Where is the temp sensor?
I have an 86 tpi z and I need to replace the temp sensor which controls the fan(which is a single). First, is it correct that on tpi, the sensor sends a signal to the ECM, which in turn grounds the relay? Also, I know that the sensor is supposed to be on the passenger side toward the front of the car but I can't find it. Does anybody have a pic or a good description of where it is? Thanks. ~Arnold

Pass. side in the rear of the head, between #6 and #8 spark plugs.

I looked there and there is just a little plug. I found a sensor between spark plugs 1 & 3 but that is just for the guage, right? So is the sensor that controls the fan just the CTS on the manifold? If so where is it? Thanks.~ Arnold
AB,
Usually, EngineBoy is all over the situation, but this IS an '86 TPI we're talking about - the bastard-child of the breed. Your CTS is located at the extreme front of the intake manifold, and has a yellow and a black wire on the connector.
And, yes, the ECM controls the fan operation until the AC high-side pressure exceeds 375 PSIG, whereupon the pressure switch overrides the ECM and operates the fan relay.
Before you indiscriminately replace the CTS, you might want to check the resistance reading first to make sure it is the problem.

Thanks vader. I believe I found it. The "problem" is that I want to make my fan come on at about 190. It seems that I can't get one of the hypertech since my CTS not only controls the fan but all the other temp related funtcions, right? So what I need to do is get an aftermarket sensor that will fit in that plug in the radiator and re-wire the fan relay to be controlled off that, right? Does anyone know of such a sensor? Thanks so much~ Arnold
