timing cover question

ok Ive got a 84 camaro berlinetta with the 305 it is the original engine BUT the timing cover has been changed to one of those crappy mr. gasket covers anyways, my problem is that when I put the timing light on it the mark is about straight up about the 12 o'clock position but the timing pointer is located at about the 2 o'clock position. Does anyone know where the timing pointer is located on the factory timing cover. (the car runs and drives fine its just bugging me)

On the 305, the timing tab is supposed to be at 12 o'clock. On the 350, the tab is at roughly 1:30.

Sounds like you have a 350 timing tab and a 305 balancer.

The 0° marking on a stock timing tab is usually at about 38° from the vertical centerline of the engine.

Vader, I still say it's at 12 o'clock.

Here, i ran out to my garage and took a shot of one of my random car parts. Happens to be a 305 timing cover, i believe. Notice the timing tab location.

Sorry for the image quality, i was in haste.

What year 305 are you looking at? He asked about an '84, I believe, and that should be in the old position - Flat marker tab and without the pickup loop.

I believe that came off my 85 LG4 (out of a Caprice). I lost track of all my engine parts a long time ago, though.

But i know i have another 305 one around here somewhere.....maybe my mom threw it away...
