Gas gauge prob

This morning on my way to work I pulled out of my driveway kind of fast and thought I smelled a faint burning smell, like brakes burning. So I’m driving along and see my gas gauge telling me I’m low. So I stop, put $10 in and turn the key forward. Gas gauge doesn’t move. Turn on the car. Still nothing. Drove 5 miles to work still nothing. So, I dunno what could be wrong, but that ain’t good. Isn’t there a thing like the oil sending unit for the gas gauge? That could be it right? I hope it’s not serious. Anyway, car runs great though, so I dunno any help is appreciated.

if im not mistaken (and i probably am) the gas gauge works on resistance with a floater and a resistor....... if that goes bad the gauge wont work....i m not sure though someone tell me if im wrong or not please
