FUEL INJECTOR plastic part
FUEL INJECTOR plastic part
I am in the process of changing the O-rings seal on the bottom of the fuel injectors. the reason for changing that I had a vac. leak around a few of the injectors. When I start to change the o-ring seals at the bottom of the injectors ( where the fuel sprays from), I notice that the red/brown color end cap is cracked and falling to pieces. I was wondering if the end caps are really needed or could I just take them all off and just have the O-ring seals installed? I don't have the money to buy new fuel injectors and would like to know if this would work. Also is there any way I could just replaced the end caps of the injectors? Where would I get the parts?
Thanks for the help,

if its the part that I'm thinking of then its a filter screen on the injector. I would definatly recommend replacement of the part since you don't want ANY dirt getting into the system. The fuel filter does a good job of sifting out materials, but that screen is there as a fail safe. For my TBI I found the screens at Advance auto for like $.40 for the two injectors. (I think its called an injector filter kit or something, I can't find the receipt right now...) When your replacing the O-rings be sure to lubricate them with oil before slipping them on, this will protect them from any damage that can occur...
p.s. If they are anything like the TBI injectors, there is also a small circular screen in the of the injector that should also be replaced. This usually comes with the filter kit.
Good luck,
Mike

Thanks Burntblues, but that is not a filter from what I can tell. To me, I think it is an end cap on the injector where the fuel is sprayed from but I don't known if it is replacable?

Rpettway, nobody around here carries those. They carry the O-ring kit for the injectors, but not the pintle caps (the item you're asking about). I needed 'em for that 2.8-to-2.8 (which is mpfi, a version of tpi) swap I just did- but couldnt' find them locally.
Finally, I got a mech from Pep Boys. I told him we must've bought the wrong kit from them (altho I bought it elsewhere, heh), and we needed the caps on the end. He told me to throw 'em away, the engine can run without them. So, since my buddy needed the car back asap, we cracked off the remaining 3, and just put new o-rings on & reinstalled the injectors. I don't know how accurate the Pep Boys guy was, but the car's still running!

Depends on the year and type of injector as to if they are absolutely needed or not. NAPA should have them, same with the dealer. If you pay more than a buck for a bag including an o-ring, plastic washer, and the cap, you are getting ripped off.
****UPDATE****
After searching for the end caps I went to the Pontiac Parts Department, and bought theinjector seal kit. The kit came with ACDelco O-rings, Washers, and a weird looking end cap. I paid $21.99 for the kit. They indeed ripped me off, but it was a small Price for a big vacuum leak. Before the car would shake wildly at idle and hesitate badly. After reinstalling the tpi and everything, the is running alot smoother at idle with just a little shaking from a big CAM I installed over the past summer. If anyone is looking for a vac. leak around there engine but cannot find the leak after spraying carb cleaner, check around the fuel injectors.
Thanks everyone for the help,
