timming after rebuild

Well I finished my rebuild "see sig" and it's not running bad. just got a few dumb questions.

1) I had the O2 sensor in on the breakin, including the new headers. it seems to be shot now. I'm figuring this is a common mistake?

2) she runs rough unless I advance the timing to around 14deg. then all seems cool. what did I screw up?

3) I don't think I want to mess with the ECM anymore, I already went to a vacuum advance distributor, any way to tune and run the Q-jet without the silanoid and TPS?

any help is greatly apeseated
Chuck

P.S. I have two sets of 305 heads left over 58cc. If anyone wants to pay shiping from RI you can have them

A quick Question: Are you using the Computer Controlled Q-jet, and an HEI distributor. If that is the case, that is definately a no-no. Would want to go to a non-cc version, or just get an aftermarket to match the HEI.

Yes I put in a vacuum advance HEI and I still have the CC Q-jet. I was thinking of an edelbrock 600, any opinions?

Can anyone help me with the timing situation?

you can't have one without the other, If you get rid of your CC HEI for a non-CC style its time to switch carbs as well.

I like the edelbrocks. They are great for a street car, especially one that is a daily driver. But my prediction is that within hours someone will post telling you not to get one, instead get a holley. If you want to fiddle with everything, and spend forever and a day tuning it, get a holley. If you want something that needs rebuilt if you **** up and make it backfire, get a holley. Otherwise go edelbrock.
