Scratching sound coming from Crank/Balancer
Hey guys,
Another problem I was hoping you can help me out with. Ive got a 91 RS 305 TBI auto with about 120,000 on the clock. I just got the car out of storage recently (Stored about a year) and I am trying to get it running good agian. At idle, there is a scracthing sound coming from the front-bottom of the motor. Right near the harmonic balancer. Its definitly loud enough to hear from 15 feet and it fades in and out randomly. I am worried that it may be a bearing in the motor. I hope not. Is it possible for the harmonic balancer to make this kinda noise. (Mabey if it got bent?)
Thanks in Advance,
Mark B

Description sounds kind of like the AIR pump.
Get yourself a piece of heater hose and stick it in your ear (my favorite instruction to people!!) and probe around with the other end to locate the source of the noise.

i'll second the air pump. i had the same problem. it was a horribly annoying noise. replaced the pump it went away.
of course i did use a stethoscope to pinpoint the source of the noise.

Check the harmonic balancer. I have heard from about 1982-1986
V8's, the balancer likes to "walk" towards the timing cover when it gets some wear on it. I don't know if this problem was solved by 1991. Just a thought.
